Your support will help raise awareness, educate and give information to people and carers in order to save and improve lives. Early diagnosis and effective treatment of urological diseases provides the best chance for a good recovery.
Our work falls into four principal areas: firstly, a comprehensive programme of research in three main theme areas, urological cancer, bladder and pelvic floor function and upper urinary tract and kidney disease and is a leading centre of excellence in urological disease.
Secondly, the Institute has gained a global reputation and has become a major national and international education centre. The training of medical students, junior hospital doctors, consultants, GPs and specialist nurses; this is to ensure that patients are treated by highly trained staff that has the most up to date knowledge of treatment within urology.
Thirdly, in 1998 the BioMed Centre was established within the BUI with the specific task of improving the management of disabled and older people requiring long-term catheterisation for their intractable urinary problems. In 2005 the BioMed Healthcare Technology Cooperative was set up to create a partnership between clinicians, researchers, patients and carers and industry to accelerate the development and adoption of new products and treatment protocols to improve continence care.
And finally, the BUI Prostate Cancer Care Appeal was launched in 2000 to raise funds for the Bristol Urological Prostate Cancer Care Centre, which concentrates on high quality research into prostate cancer, and other urological cancers- bladder, kidney and testicular cancer. The centre provides treatment, support and information to patients and their families.

The Institute relies on voluntary support from individuals, companies and charitable trusts; here are just a few ideas:

Over 70% of the UK population have not written a Will, which can often leave family and loved ones with increased stress at what is an already a very difficult time. Writing your Will ensures your family and loved ones are cared for in the way you intended and gives you the reassurance of knowing where your property will go, who will benefit from your legacy, and what arrangements will be made after your death. It also means that if you want to leave some money for a special purpose – such as helping the Bristol Urological Institute in its vital work, helping to saves and improve lives or any other registered charity you can.
Making a will isn’t complicated and needn’t be expensive:
- First, appoint a professional adviser - usually a solicitor or bank.
- Next, work out how much you have to leave, including the total sum of your property, money and possessions, less any outstanding mortgages or loans.
- Decide who you want to benefit from your will. For example, your family, friends, a favorite charity or other good causes.
- Choose executors to make sure your wishes are carried out. These can be professional advisers, friends or family members – or one of each.
- Finally, keep your will safe and make sure your executors know where to find it.
- Give one copy to your solicitor or bank.
There are three main ways that you can leave a gift in your will:
1. A share of your estate (residuary legacy)
2. A specific sum (pecuniary legacy)
3. A specific item such as jewellery, a painting , shares or a house (specific legacy)
Inheritance Tax- currently set at £325,000 in the year 2009-10; the Tax is payable at 40 per cent on the amount over this threshold.
An added bonus, in the UK any legacy you may wish to leave to the Institute is free of tax, no inheritance tax. If you are planning to leave a gift in your will or you would like more information please contact our Fundraising & Marketing Manager.
