Teaching and Research

Established in 1993, the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) is based at Southmead Hospital and has become well-respected, enjoying a national and international reputation as one of the foremost research organisations for urology in the UK. The Institute’s aims are to:

  • Improve the urological treatment and care of patients in Bristol and the South West
  • Provide a high standard of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Support and develop urological research, with particular emphasis on urological cancers (of the prostate, bladder, kidney and testes) and the problems of urinary incontinence
  • The Institute has gained a global reputation and has become a major national and international education centre. The teaching programme has evolved into an increasing number of national meetings, including operative courses, and an impressive database of research publications has been achieved.
