The Captains’ and members of Thornbury Golf Club have decided to help fight prostate cancer by raising funds for prostate cancer patient care and research by supporting as their chosen charity for 2009 the Bristol Urological Institute.The club will be holding various events throughout the year.

Technology in Diagnostics for Urological Cancer
Friday 12 February 2010 Bristol (venue to be confirmed)
 
This symposium will highlight the clinical need for new urological cancer diagnostics in the context of today's NHS, and showcase emerging technologies to address these needs.  The event will be beneficial to anyone involved or interested in cancer diagnostics, including clinicians, academics and industry.  This is a joint event between the BUI and the Institute of Bio-Sensing Technology (University of the West of England).  Further details will follow, and registration will open shortly.

Ketamine Abuse Leading to Bladder & Kidney Problems
BBC Inside Out

Doctors and drug workers in Bristol have established a link between the use of Class C drug ketamine and severe bladder and kidney problems.

 
A BBC investigation for Inside Out West (screened 04/02/09) featuring David Gillatt, Director, Bristol Urological Institute, found a rising number of ketamine users in their teens and 20s were admitted to Southmead Hospital over the past year.

Congratulatons - Top Awards for BUI Research Nurses
Julie Ellis-Jones BUI Senior Research Nurse
 
Nikki Cotterill Bui Research Nurse
Julie Ellis-Jones, a Senior Research Nurse at the BUI and specialist nurse in the Urodynamic Unit at Southmead Hospital, was awarded a Florence Nightingale Research Scholarship to support her dissertation year of an MSc Advanced Practice (HSC) at the University of the West of England in
Bristol.
 
BUI Research Nurse Nikki Cotterill recently beat competition from all over the world to win the New Investigator’s Award at the International Continence Society’s (ICS) annual meeting in Cairo in October 2008. Nikki won the award for her work in developing a questionnaire that aims to improve assessment of symptoms and their impact on quality of life among people experiencing anal incontinence.
