Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in men
International Continence Society BPH Study
This study has been co-ordinated by the department and has recruited over 1,200 patients worldwide. Recruitment to the observational study (Phase 1) and the non-randomised study on the effects of treatments (Phase II) are complete. The study has allowed the comparison of individual symptoms and urodynamic findings.
Treatment of Bladder Outlet Obstruction (BOO)
The department is involved in many studies looking at different aspects of treating prostatic outlet obstruction. In addition to the natural history project, two other major projects are underway with respect to developing or assessing new treatments:
Patients' experiences from surgery are being assessed and a new questionnaire is being developed. The aim of this study is to understand better the patient's perception of outcome after treatment.
Drug studies - in addition to these major projects, the department is involved in drug studies evaluating alpha blockers and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors in the treatment of benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). A novel study assessing an anti-cholinergic in treating detrusor overactivity in the presence of BOO is underway.
Urodynamic Assessment of BOO
A major review of 500 patients is underway to evaluate the precise role of urine flow studies compared with pressure flow studies in the diagnosis of BOO. It is expected that this study will be a pivotal investigation in the ultimate decision-making process, prior to outlet tract surgery.
