BUI Integration into North Bristol NHS Trust – June 2010

In January 2010 North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) presented the Trustees of the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) with a proposal to incorporate the BUI’s current research, innovation and education activities into the Surgical Directorate of the Trust. On 25th May 2010 the BUI Trustees accepted a final proposal from NBT for the BUI to become part of a larger sustainable organisation going forward in the context of a growing pan-Bristol partnership between the NHS and universities.

Therefore, from 1st June 2010 all BUI interests were transferred into mainstream NBT NHS business, together with fundraising activities, which are to be managed as a charitable funds portfolio within the overall NBT Charitable Funds.

Established in 1993, the Bristol Urological Institute has become well-respected, enjoying a national and international reputation as one of the foremost research organisations for urology in the UK. It is important to preserve and build on its name and identity and, to this end, the BUI will retain and develop its brand within the NBT management structure. The present BUI building and other assets will be donated to NBT under a legally binding Deed of Gift, and the NBT will honour a previous agreement to re-provide BUI facilities within the new hospital and associated facilities.

The BUI will, therefore, cease to operate as a Company Limited by Guarantee. The BUI’s fundraising will continue as normal concentrating on improving urological treatment and care of patients in Bristol and the South West, provide a high standard of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, support and develop urological research, with particular emphasis on urological cancers (of the prostate, bladder, kidney and testes) and the problems of urinary incontinence under the North Bristol NHS Charitable Funds - Charity Registration Number 1055900.
